Race recap: Girls run club x Run Shellharbour
On Sunday September 29th some of the participants of The Girls Run Club participated in the 5km race at a local event called Run Shellharbour. This was the culmination of our first term and a half of running together in the run club and I was so excited to see the girls participate in the race. For many of the girls this would be their first time running the full 5km distance and their first official race.
We arrived and picked up our race bibs, made a toilet trip and then took some photos together before heading to the start line. We chatted about pacing strategies, particularly not going out too fast and starting conservatively before drawing on any last energy in the final hundred metres of the race. We also chatted about race etiquette like sticking over the left of the course, raising a hand if we were about to take a walk break and disposing of drink cups thoughtfully. Then it was time for a quick race briefing and we were off.
The course followed an out and back route around Barrack Point and along the Warilla foreshore before turning back to the finish. There was a nice supportive atmosphere with lots of high fives and cheers for other runners along the course.
There were lots of smiles as all of the girls finished the race and claimed their medals. I am so proud of them all and I have a feeling this won’t be our last race as a group! What a brilliant day :) Amy
